Teaching
This section outlines The National Standards for group management. It is divided into four sections:
- Preparing participants and introducing activities
- Leading a session
- Maintaining and encouraging effective relationships during a session
- Concluding and reviewing a session
A. Preparing participants and introducing activities
What you must do to meet The National Standard
- Be there prior to the clients
- Help the clients feel welcome and at ease
- Follow your organisation's procedures for checking the clients are present
- Make sure the clients' dress and equipment are safe and appropriate
- Explain the aims, objectives and content of the session to all the clients and assure them that we are inline with the client's expectations
- Find out if the clients have any relevant experience you can build on
- Make sure the clients are mentally and physically prepared for the planned activities
- Explain and demonstrate key points to the clients, using methods appropriate to their needs
- Explain the importance of these key points
- Encourage the clients' question
- Answer the clients' questions helpfully and clearly
- Check that the clients understand what you want them to do
- Motivate the clients without putting them under undue stress
- Organise the clients so that you can communicate effectively with them
To be competent in this unit you must demonstrate minimum levels of knowledge accompanying each item of the standard.

B. Lead activities in a session
What you must do to meet The National Standard:
- Make sure the clients are following your instructions throughout the session
- Follow your planned procedures for health and safety and environmental protection
- Develop the session at a pace suited to the clients and in a way that meets its aims and objectives
- Give the clients clear and supportive feedback at appropriate stages
- Provide the clients with additional explanations and demonstrations when necessary
- Encourage the clients to say how they feel about the session and respond to their feelings appropriately
- Vary your session plan to meet new needs and opportunities
- Identify any new risks during the session and respond to these correctly
To be competent in this unit you must demonstrate minimum levels of knowledge accompanying each item of the standard.
What you must cover:
From your work you must demonstrate that you have been trained to lead activities involving the following:
- Clients
- Young people (optional)
- People with particular needs (optional)
You must also demonstrate that you have been trained to help these clients to achieve two of the following types of:
- Aims and objectives
- Recreation
- Curriculum based
- Encouraging future participation and progress in cycling
You must also demonstrate that you have provided feedback to both individuals and groups.
However, you must also show that you have the necessary knowledge and skills to cover all types of the context listed above.

C. Maintaining and encouraging effective working relationships during a session
What you must do to meet the National Standard:
- Communicate and interact with clients that is in a way that is appropriate to their needs
- Maintain a relationship with clients that is in line with good practice, industry values and ethical requirements
- Give adequate attention to each participant in the group, according to their needs
- Understand child protection issues
- Encourage effective communication and interpersonal skills between clients and between clients and staff
- Make clear to clients the effect their behaviour has on others
- Highlight types of behaviour that have a positive effect on the group as a whole
- Identify and challenge discriminatory and other unacceptable behaviour in a way that maintains the emotional welfare of the clients and follows agreed procedures
- Identify and deal with disagreements between clients or between clients and staff promptly and fairly
To be competent in this unit you must demonstrate minimum levels of knowledge accompanying each item of the standard.
What you must cover
From your work you must demonstrate that you have been trained to teach the in the following types of participant:
- Adults
- Children and young people
- Clients with particular needs (optional)

D. Concluding and reviewing a session
What you must do to meet The National Standard:
- Manage your time effectively to bring the session to an end
- Prepare the clients emotionally and physically to finish the activities safely
- Encourage and help the clients to clear up at the end of the session
- Give the clients any further information they might need
- Make sure the clients leave the session in a safe and orderly manner
- Follow your organisation's procedures for reporting and recording incidents during the session
- Encourage and help the clients to give open and honest feedback about the session
- Make sure that the review process takes full account of what happened during the session and the clients' feedback
- Summarise with the clients how well the session achieved its planned aims
- Identify with the clients what has been achieved and learnt during the session and encourage a sense of achievement
- Identify with the clients how well the session met their needs and expectations
- Explore with the clients how any unmet needs and expectations could be met
- Discuss the outcomes of the review with the colleague responsible for the programme and agree future actions
To be competent in this unit you must demonstrate minimum levels of knowledge accompanying each item of the standard.
What you must cover
From your work you must demonstrate that you have been trained to complete the following:
- Recreation session
- Curriculum based session i.e. Cycle Training Certificate
- Personal and social development
- Encourage future participation and progress in cycling
With at least one of the following types of participants:
- Clients
- Children and young people
- People with particular needs (optional)
